Mom was allegedly on Facebook while baby drowned in tub
A mother in Texas was on Facebook for nearly 20 minutes as her infant daughter drowned in a bathtub, authorities say.
Cheyenne Summer Stuckey, 21, told investigators she put 6-month-old Zayla Hernandez unsupervised in the bathtub with water running at her Reno home and left the girl alone for “only a couple minutes,” WFAA reports, citing the Parker County Sheriff’s Office.
Stuckey later found the girl unresponsive, face-down in the tub. She told responding deputies that she tried to resuscitate Zayla but “did not know how,” CBS Dallas reports.
Stuckey said she became “distracted” by another child after leaving the bathroom and then hopped onto Facebook as a television blared nearby. At that point, investigators say she realized she had forgotten about her daughter.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Stuckey had been on Facebook for at least 18 minutes as the girl was left alone, messaging two people.
The girl was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy report ruled that she died from drowning.
Stuckey, whose bond had not yet been set, was charged with injury to a child.
Other children in the home were placed in foster care, although the number and ages of those children are unclear. But according to a fundraiser set up for the girl’s memorial service, she is survived by 4-year-old twin sisters and a 2-year-old brother.
“Please keep the family and friends in your deepest thoughts and prayers during this fragile time as they struggle to deal with the loss of beautiful baby Zayla,” the GoFundMe page reads. “No donation is too small, each and every donation will be greatly appreciated to help prepare to lay their Angel to rest.”
