A 43-year-old man lit a firework on top of his head, resulting in his near-sudden death in San Antonio, police say.

Officers in San Antonio were called to a residential area just after midnight on Tuesday, July 5, following the firework mishap, according to a police report.

First responders found the victim was suffering from severe head trauma, with brain matter exposed from his skull, police said.

The victim, identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office as 43-year-old Pablo Ruiz, died shortly after officers arrived, according to the police report.

Ruiz’ friend, who witnessed the fatal incident, said Ruiz had been drinking when he chose to light the mortar-style firework from the top of his head. Investigators believe it somehow exploded from the bottom of the tube and pierced the top of his skull.

young girl was out scalloping at this Florida beach, cops say. Then came the shark

A frightening scene played out on Thursday in Keaton Beach, off the Gulf Coast in northwestern Florida, after a young girl was attacked by a shark.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, the child lost her leg. Taylor County Sheriff Wayne Padgett told CBS affiliate WCTV that the girl had successful surgery and is expected to survive.

She was reportedly “scalloping,” which involves floating along the surface of shallow water, usually wearing a mask and snorkel, looking for the prized shellfish in the grassy bottom.

The bite victim, whose name and age weren’t publicly released, was in water approximately five feet deep near Grassy Island, when the approximately nine-foot shark approached.

A family member jumped in the water and beat the shark until it swam away, the sheriff says.

TCSO deputies, along with Taylor County Fire & Rescue and Century Ambulance EMS, responded to Keaton Beach to render emergency aid.

The girl was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.

The sheriff’s office put out a news release on social media warning others who wish to participate in Florida’s scalloping season, which lasts through Labor Day in the Gulf of Mexico, to be vigilant.

“Some rules to follow are: never swim alone, do not enter the water near fishermen, avoid areas such as sandbars (where sharks like to congregate), do not swim near large schools of fish, and avoid erratic movements while in the water.”

“It’s a tragedy, what’s happened,” Padgett said of the incident, adding the type of shark involved was not determined.

'It's such a strange thing to see': Photos show Lake Mead on the verge of becoming a 'dead pool'

Scenes around Lake Mead as persistent drought drives water levels to their lowest point in history.

The sun began to set but the temperature hovered around 106 degrees. I was there to document one of the latest objects to emerge from Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, serving the needs of some 20 million people in the Desert Southwest.

In recent weeks, lots of things have resurfaced, including dead bodies, formerly sunken boats and trash.

“It’s a totem pole for the climate age,” said Sam Morris, as he photographed a battered power boat, its stern buried in the mud of the drying lake, its bow pointing sharply upward at the almost cloudless sky. “It’s such a strange thing to see.”

A white band of dried rock now surrounds the vast lake.

A white "bathtub ring" around Echo Bay is evidence of the declining water level in Lake Mead.

It’s called a “bathtub ring” and clearly shows how much water levels have dropped in the last two decades, amid the driest conditions of the last 1,200 years, according to scientists. I was surprised by how much lower the lake looked from a year ago when I was last here.

The situation is critical.

The lake’s surface is at about 1,045 feet above sea level. If it drops another 150 feet, there will not be enough water flowing through Hoover Dam to supply large metropolitan centers downstream, including Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Diego. When that happens, Lake Mead will be a “dead pool.”

Fourth of July 'travel drama': Airlines warn passengers to prepare for issues

·6 min read

Barrett Lane was on his way from Washington, D.C., to one of his college best friend’s wedding in Thousand Oaks, California, when his flight was delayed ahead of July Fourth weekend.

The 34-year-old transportation project manager and his husband had flown into Newark, New Jersey, where they were supposed to change planes, when their United Airlines flight to Los Angeles was pushed back four hours because of a maintenance problem.

Several more delays later, the couple boarded the plane Wednesday night along with other passengers, and sat at the gate for three hours.

The airline eventually let them deplane, and the flight was pushed back until the morning. Hotels were full, so the couple slept on cots on the airport floor.

“I think I maybe slept like an hour total,” Lane told USA TODAY. By the time the flight finally took off the next morning, it had been delayed more than 14 hours.

While Lane's experience was on the extreme end, flight delays and cancellations have become all too common this summer as air transportation struggles to get back to normal after the pandemic-era slump.

Travel credits: Airlines issued billions in credits during the pandemic. Here's why travelers need to use them ASAP

United gave the couple a total of $60 in food vouchers and $300 in-flight credit each, Lane said. A customer service representative also told Lane the airline would refund the miles he used for the flight (his husband booked separately and had not called customer service yet). And while he planned to skip the wedding rehearsal to rest, he is going to try to enjoy the trip and occasion.

"You can talk about your travel drama for a little bit ... but the focus is on the bride and the groom and the wedding party," he said. "So, I'm going to try my best not to be the main character this weekend."

china does nothing to get liked ...... its  servile  .........sub standrad  barainwashing ....the way it  treats its people ....its  dishonesty ....the way they treat animals ........ their  complete self  hatred   for  their  existence  .....their  thieving .....its a servile  nasty  culture ....... the people  do not  talk to you unless.... you are giving them money they......... do not  integrate  ....very very  rarely .....you saw their true  colors  during the  lock down in their country in COVID

Negative views of China around the world are higher than ever, reveals new Pew survey

A Pew survey of 19 countries published yesterday found that unfavorable attitudes toward China reached an all-time high in countries like the U.S. and increased significantly in others.

The survey conducted between February 13 and June 3 revealed unfavorable views were mainly related to concerns over China’s human rights policies.

The Pew Research Center listed four key issues in total, with the other three being China’s military power, economic competition and its involvement in domestic politics in each country.

Respondents were asked to say whether each issue was a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem for their country.

Across the nations surveyed, a top median of 79% found China’s human rights policies to be a “serious problem,” with another 47% claiming them to be a “very serious problem.”

Of the 19 countries surveyed, 10 countries showed a record-high percentage of holding unfavorable opinions of China, including Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Greece and South Korea, with numbers ranging anywhere from 50% (Greece) to 80% (South Korea).

Japan held the highest percentage of respondents who had an unfavorable opinion of China with 87%; however, the nation’s record high was reported in 2013 with 93%.

Interestingly enough, while unfavorable views of China showed high percentages, this did not necessarily translate to people viewing their country’s relations with China as “bad.”

For example, 82% of Americans held unfavorable views of China, but only 70% said relations with China were bad, a significantly smaller percentage.

This was even more significant in countries like Hungary and Greece, which had 52% and 50% respectively in holding unfavorable views, but only 8% and 7% when it came to saying relations with China were bad.

Pastor and family stole $8M from taxpayers in Covid scam, feds say. Why haven’t they been charged?

Federal agents in Florida had been seeking to question Evan Edwards, a pastor, and his family for days when their Mercedes SUV was spotted speeding on I-75 north of Gainesville.

The Edwardses were Christian missionaries from Canada who lived in Turkey for many years and moved to Florida in 2019. On paper they ran a faith-based charity with a high-minded mission: to “communicate Christian love in doctrine and service to the poor.”

But by the fall of 2020, the family of four — dad Evan; mom Mary Jane; daughter Joy, 36; and son Josh, 30 — were suspected of pulling off a multimillion-dollar fraud that targeted the government’s Covid relief program for small businesses and nonprofits.

The Edwardses received more than $8 million after Josh filed paperwork falsely claiming that their ministry, ASLAN International Ministry, had 486 employees and a monthly payroll of $2.7 million, according to a federal forfeiture complaint.

A federal investigation raised serious red flags. Among them: The accountant who purportedly signed off on the loan allegedly had dementia and hadn’t done any work for the organization since 2017.

Now, just after 8:49 p.m. on Sept. 17, 2020, the Edwardses’ beige Mercedes was being pulled over by three Florida Highway Patrol cars. All four family members were inside the vehicle.

Evan Edwards told the officers they were headed to a conference in Texas, but he could not provide any specifics, according to the complaint.

Federal agents arrived on the scene and began searching the 2020 Mercedes. What they found indicated this was not a typical road trip.

Edwards, seated in the front passenger seat, had a laser printer on his lap. In a rear passenger seat, next to his wife and daughter, were two clear garbage bags full of shredded documents, according to the complaint.

The family’s personal electronic devices were stuffed into a so-called Faraday bag, which blocks radio frequencies to keep from being tracked, the complaint says.

  • Lawyers for Elmer Stewart Rhodes will tell jurors the far-right group believed President Trump would federalize them.

  • They will argue at their Sept. 28 seditious conspiracy trial that this, not sedition, was their lawful reason to be at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

  • They'll also claim the Insurrection Act is so vaguely written, Trump legally could have used it to make them a federal militia.

When nine accused leaders of the Oath Keepers go on trial for seditious conspiracy in Washington, DC, this fall, jurors in the government's first big, Jan. 6 showcase trial will hear a defense argument that sounds little short of crazy.

They'll be told that the far-right extremists believed President Donald Trump would invoke the Insurrection Act as they gathered at the Capitol, 100 strong in their camo-colored tactical gear — and turn them into his own, ultra-loyal federal militia.

Their fantasy mission? To "Stop the Steal," "Defend the President," and "Defeat the Deep State," according to since-deleted rhetoric from their website. A defiant Trump would officially be their commander in chief.

"Do NOT concede, and do NOT wait until January 20, 2021," Inauguration Day. "Strike now," Oath Keepers leader and founder Elmer Stewart Rhodes urged in an open letter to Trump on Dec. 14, 2020.

"You must call us up and command us."

James Lee Bright, a lawyer for Rhodes, jokes that most people will laugh to learn the Oath Keepers thought they'd ever be a federal militia. "They believe what?" Bright imagines them thinking. "These guys are fucking crazy."

But he says he plans nonetheless to convince jurors that the pro-Trump, anti-government group actually had two lawful — and non-seditious — reasons to be at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Reason one: They were an invited security force for rally planners and participants, including Roger Stone, Ali Alexander, Latinos for Trump and Virginia Women for Trump.

Reason two: They were awaiting Trump's orders.

When those orders failed to come, Rhodes' lawyers will argue, the Oath Keepers left the Capitol. They had dinner at Olive Garden, and then collected the weapons and provisions they'd stashed — at the ready but never used — in their rooms at a Comfort Inn in Arlington, VA. Then they went home.

"I just want to fight," federal prosecutors say Rhodes complained after failing to get Trump on the phone that night, like some extremist Pinocchio with a thwarted dream of becoming a real militiaman.

Prosecutors, will, of course, tell jurors a different tale.

The feds argue in court papers that the Oath Keepers' private chat messages show sedition was their real motive.

The chats are full of references to a Civil War against "the usurpers" — Joe Biden and Kamala Harris — and to using force to oppose the transfer of presidential power, which is the very definition of seditious conspiracy.

The feds also argue that Rhodes oversaw two military-style "stacks" or formations, of Oath Keepers who forcibly breached the Capitol — and that the real reason the group left DC was that the FBI had begun making arrests.

A far fetched fantasy

"I don't necessarily understand the mindset of it," says Bright, whose private practice is based in Dallas.

"It's not my world view," says Bright, speaking to Insider this week about the Oath Keepers' strategy for a 5-to-6 week trial scheduled to begin Sept. 28.

"But the evidence does exist that these individuals believed in it," he said of the group's hope that Trump would use the Insurrection Act to summon them into federal service against an imagined Biden-Harris "coup."

"They believed that if it was invoked, it was legal," Bright said. "And it would have been legal, arguably."

Which leads to perhaps the most eyebrow-raising part of the Oath Keepers' planned defense.

The Insurrection Act is so broadly written — leaving words like "insurrection," "militia" and "militias of the state" without clear definition  — that Trump actually could have federalized the Oath Keepers, Rhodes' lawyers will tell jurors.

"It's so farfetched, and yet it's legal," at least until a court stepped in and held otherwise, Bright believes.

Experts in the Insurrection Act, on the other hand, say no. It's just farfetched.

"While I understand where they got the idea from, what they're saying is mostly nonsense," says Joseph Nunn, counsel for the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School.

Yes, Nunn concedes, there is a separate, archaic federal statute, 10 USC 246 — drafted in 1792, the same year as the original Insurrection Act — which still includes as part of a larger definition of militia, "all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age ... and
