THE Prime Minister backed calls for FIFA to probe whether Argentina players broke rules after flaunting a banner in support of the country’s claims to the Falkland Islands.

Players on the Argentine side held up a sign reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” after their semi-final match against England.

The writing translates to “The Falklands are Argentine”, a political statement that could see the team fined.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes went on to tell a reporter in a post-match interview that the Falklands “will always be Argentine.”

Cabinet minister Peter Kyle said it was “entirely inappropriate” for this to happen after Argentina’s 2-1 victory against England.

And, Downing Street retorted today, telling the Argentinian side that the Falklands are “definitely ours.”

Lionel Messi was among those holding and waving the sign as well as Tottenham captain Cristian Romero and Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez.

Reform leader Nigel Farage said: “Whilst I am disgusted at the behaviour of some Argentinian players last night, the most important thing to do is build up the Royal Navy quickly.”

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch pledged that the Conservatives would always fight to defend the Falklands Islands.

She said: “The Falkland Islands are British. The Conservatives will always defend them.”

And, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey took to social media to say: “In August 2024 Rodri and Álvaro Morata were rightly banned for one match for singing ‘Gibraltar is Spain.’

“Now the Argentine players who celebrated with the ‘Falklands are Argentine’ banner must be barred from the final.”

Mr Davey has penned a letter to Fifa asking them to suspend the players who held up the controversial banner.

The Falkland Islands is a British overseas territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean 300 miles off Argentina’s east coast.

Britain has had control of the islands since winning a bitter war to defend them from Buenos Aires in 1982, after Argentina invaded and occupied the territory.

The conflict claimed the lives of 255 UK servicemen, three islanders, and 649 Argentine personnel.

Argentina has refused to accept Britain’s ownership of the Falklands ever since.

No 10 echoed remarks made earlier by Business Secretary Peter Kyle that the governing body should “thoroughly” probe the behaviour of the defending champions after they beat England 2-1 in Wednesday’s match in Atlanta.

A statement from No10 on the controversy read: “The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are.”

Fifa already slapped Argentina with a £20,000 fine in 2014 for holding up a banner with the same message before a friendly against Slovenia.

The South Americans, who face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final hoping to retain their title, may expect more financial punishment for this latest offence.

Football’s world governing body had banned flags featuring the Falklands from the stadium due to their political significance.

After Argentina’s victory, vice-president Victoria Villarruel posted on X that “it wasn’t another match” alongside a video of what seemed to be Argentine soldiers.

She wrote: “The Falklands are Argentine. They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts.”

The vice-president had inflamed tensions in the build-up to the semi-final by calling England “usurping pirates”.

It comes after Argentina accused Britain of an illegal military incursion after HMS Medway voyaged near to the Falkland Islands Hours after Argentina dumped England out of the World Cup.

Buenos Aires filed a formal protest over the British warship’s “unconsulted and illegal” passage.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno claimed the Medway, which is based in the Falkland Islands, illegally entered Argentine waters earlier this month.

He accuses the Royal Navy of ignoring clear diplomatic agreements, saying the British failed to notify Buenos Aires of the warship’s journey.

However Downing Street said the UK notified Argentina’s government of a Royal Navy ship’s movements in advance.

A No 10 spokeswoman told reporters: “The facts here are that we notified the Argentinian government in advance of HMS Medway undertaking a routine logistics visit to Chile between 5 and 8 July to support British Antarctic survey operations, which will deliver essential stores and supplies to sustain scientific research in Antarctica.

“The Royal Navy always operates in full compliance with international law, and the transit from the Falkland Islands to Chile was carried out via the most direct practical route, considering operational safety and weather factors to ensure timely delivery.”
