North Carolina woman dreamed of being blind and took her own sight with drain cleaner
A woman was permanently blinded with the help of a psychologist after claiming she had been diagnosed with a condition which made her feel she should have been born with a disability.
Jewel Shuping, from North Carolina, said she had always wanted to be born blind, acknowledging this was how she was "supposed to be born". It remains unclear whether the psychologist who assisted in carrying out the blinding faced any consequences.

Now, Jewel has come forward about her experience, hoping to bring attention to the condition. Living her life as a fully blind person, she has expressed contentment that her lifelong wish has been fulfilled.
According to the Independent, Jewel was diagnosed with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) during childhood.
The psychological condition causes sufferers to believe that, despite being in perfect health, they should have been born with a disability, reports the Daily Star.
Jewel, now 41, had yearned to become blind from an early age, harboring fantasies about losing her sight even as a young child.
She recalled that at age six, she would spend countless hours staring at the sun, wishing it would rob her of her vision.
As she matured, her fixation on blindness intensified. By her teenage years, Jewel had already begun presenting herself as though she were blind, venturing out in dark sunglasses and purchasing a white cane at 18.
By age 20, Shuping had already mastered braille - a tactile reading system used by blind individuals involving raised dots to represent specific letters and words.
During her early adult years, she says she was "blind-swimming", feigning blindness in an attempt to fulfill her lifelong desire.
"The idea kept coming up in my head and by the time I was 21 it was a non-stop alarm that was going off," she admitted.
It was during this period that she began exploring methods to permanently eliminate her sight and achieve her goal.
After years of investigation, in 2006, she says she located a psychologist who agreed to pour drain cleaner into her eyes to help her become blind.
The person is believed to have anesthetized her eyes by administering eye drops into each one, before applying two drops of drain cleaner.
Looking back on her ordeal, she described the sensation as excruciating as her vision began to fade. She went on to explain she was officially blind after six months and could perceive nothing after that point.
The identity of the psychologist remains unknown, nor is it clear whether they faced prosecution for their involvement in causing her blindness.
Today, Shuping is telling her story to bring attention to BIID and to encourage people battling the condition to seek help.
BIID, a psychological condition initially identified by Dr Michael First, is believed to impact a very tiny fraction of the population.
Usually, the disorder involves body parts and the wish for extremities such as arms and legs to be removed.
The condition can even spark envy in patients toward those who possess the disability they so desperately crave.
One possible explanation for the disorder is that "the brain is not able to provide an accurate plan of the body", suggesting that their functioning body parts feel "foreign and not actually part of the person, thus the desire to have it removed
