Don’t believe what the prosecution says! This court finds Maggie Gyllenhaal not guilty of the outrageous charge that she murdered her husband Peter Sarsgaard’s beloved bee colony. This is slander. Hearsay. Malarkey. She is innocent! And I will not rest until my client is freed from the clutches of the SmartLess podcast.

Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared on a recent episode of the podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes to chat about her upcoming film, The Bride. But she also casually revealed that her husband and collaborator, Peter Sarsgaard, is a beekeeper in his spare time, along with other wholesome hobbies like gardening, raising chickens, and tapping maple trees. During the conversation, Gyllenhaal shared the tragic tale of how all of her husband’s bees died while he was away filming, and joked that her own negligence might have been to blame.

Let’s get the facts of the case straight: “All of his bees in Brooklyn died, and it was because he made a beekeeping mistake. And he was so upset about it,” Gyllenhaal said. I love how this implies that he has bees in every city he lives in, but this particular tragedy affected only his Brooklyn colony. She didn’t reveal exactly what the “beekeeping mistake” was, but accusations were made…

The prosecution, aka Bateman, joked that it was Maggie’s responsibility to “water the bees” while he was away.

“I think you’ve gotta be able to shoulder some of that, right? The guy’s off in Switzerland. You know she had something on a piece of paper saying, ‘Baby, all I need you to do is just water the bees for me!’” Bateman most recently caught some heat after the Smartless boys interviewed Charli XCX, and he told her she’ll probably change her mind about kids once she meets someone. (She’s married.)

Gyllenhall joked that she might share some blame for the colony’s demise, but I’m not buying it. Not your circus, Maggie. Not your bees. Arnett defended her, saying, “Don’t put this on her.” Agreed. I know we have to save the bees and all, but why must everything fall back on the wife to take care of it? She’s busy directing movies. The defense rests, your honor. Hayes remained neutral.

Gyllenhaal still praised her husband for his ability to pick up the craft of beekeeping: “Peter sometimes is like, ‘I don’t need the hood. I don’t even need the gloves. I read this book—and he did!—and listened to this thing and watched these videos about how to be zen and do it so the bees that come to you,” she said. “And then he gets, like, 10 stings on his arms.” The pair has been married since 2009, and could this be the secret to a long and prosperous marriage? Let your husband have niche, slightly dangerous hobbies, and don’t attempt to get involved? “It’s hot,” she added. I think she might have cracked the case.

Verdict: Ms. Gyllenhall is not guilty of bee murder. Maybe gross negligence, but not murder.
