Goldie Hawn is opening up about why her four-decade relationship with Kurt Russell still works — no wedding rings required.

In a new interview on The Dan Buettner Podcast,  the Oscar winner, 80, says the couple’s longevity comes down to one thing: freedom.

“I’m a bird,” Hawn explained in the clip shared with People. “If you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door… I’d probably take all my feathers off.”

Hawn and Russell, 74, first got together in 1983 and share a blended family of four children: Kate, 46, and Oliver Hudson, 49, as well as Boston, 45, and Wyatt Russell, 39. Despite constant pressure over the years to marry, both have maintained that tying the knot wouldn’t change a thing.

Asked why she still chooses Russell after 42 years, Hawn didn’t hesitate: “I have respect for him. He’s an amazing person.” She also added playfully, “I’m very sexually attracted to him… He’s my sexual object.”

Still, an insider tells Globe that the duo may surprise everyone with a blowout 75th birthday party for Russell that could double as a destination wedding.

“They love going to Greece and cruising the Mediterranean,” says the insider, adding that the pair have rented a superyacht for the grand affair.

“It will be a gathering for all their loved ones, so it’s kind of the perfect opportunity to have a low-key wedding, which is all they’d want.”
