21 People Poisoned and 1 Adult Dies After Consuming Wild Mushrooms, Prompting Calif. Health Officials to Issue Advisory
"We advise the public not to forage for wild mushrooms at all during this high-risk season," said Dr. Erica Pan, the director of the California Department of Public Health
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
NEED TO KNOW
- California health officials are warning people to stop foraging for and consuming wild mushrooms after 21 cases of amatoxin poisoning have been identified, resulting in one fatality so far
- Consuming certain varieties of wild mushrooms can lead to severe liver damage
- Officials added that cooking or processing toxic mushrooms does not make them safe to eat
Health officials in California are urging people to stop eating foraged mushrooms following a poisoning outbreak. So far, 21 cases of amatoxin poisoning linked to certain types of wild mushrooms have been identified that resulted in severe liver damage in kids and adults, with one person dead.
On Friday, Dec. 5, officials issued the warning after 21 cases of toxic mushroom poisoning had been identified since mid-November, most likely by consuming death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said in a news release. Multiple victims required intensive care and at least one person may need a liver transplant. One adult has died as a result of the poisoning, according to the agency.
“Death cap mushrooms contain potentially deadly toxins that can lead to liver failure,” said Dr. Erica Pan, the director of CDPH and a state public health officer, in the release. “Because the death cap can easily be mistaken for edible safe mushrooms, we advise the public not to forage for wild mushrooms at all during this high-risk season.”
While clusters have occurred in the Monterey and San Francisco Bay Areas, there is a risk across the state. On Monday, Dec. 1, the County of Monterey Health Department announced that hospitals in the area have seen an increase in illnesses related to eating poisonous wild mushrooms.
Wild mushrooms, or mushrooms not grown by commercial growers, can be easily misidentified as edible mushrooms because of their similar look and taste. The CDPH emphasized that “cooking, boiling, drying or freezing” poisonous mushrooms does not make them safe to eat.
“Some poisonous wild mushrooms look and smell like edible types of mushrooms," said Dr. Edward Moreno, a health officer for the County of Monterey, in a statement. “Only people with extensive training and experience should eat wild mushrooms that they have picked themselves."
RELATED STORIES
People who unintentionally ingest toxic mushrooms may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dehydration six to 24 hours after consumption, according to the CDPH. While these symptoms usually disappear within a day, victims can still develop serious to fatal liver damage within 48 to 96 hours after eating the poisonous mushrooms.
Death cap mushrooms grow in various regions of California, especially near hardwood trees. Rainy conditions in the fall and winter foster ideal growing conditions, the CDPH said.

“Given the grave risk posed by consuming these toxic mushrooms, CDPH strongly advises the public to avoid foraging wild mushrooms,” the agency continued, “and to only consume mushrooms purchased from reputable stores or known commercial sources.”
