Man attacked mother, AC repairman with machete in Broward, cops say. He’s facing charges

A man is facing attempted murder charges after, police say, he attacked his mother and an AC repairman with a machete inside his Broward home Monday night — leaving both with serious injuries.

The attack happened around 5:20 p.m. inside a house at Southwest 190th Avenue and 15th Street in the Encantada neighborhood in Pembroke Pines, said Capt. Adam Feiner with Pembroke Pines police.

The man attacked was a service worker who was at the house working on repairs, Feiner said. Police say the incident stemmed from Darrell Dean Roberts’ mother asking Roberts to help with moving an item.

Roberts — who lives at the house — attacked the repairman with the weapon, causing serious injuries, according to investigators. Then, his mother stepped in between the two men to try to intervene, and Roberts, 38, attacked her.

Roberts’ mother, whose injuries are described as “brutal and life-threatening,” was airlifted to a hospital, Feiner added.

“In my 27 years of law enforcement, ...this one of the most brutal and violent attacks I have ever seen,” Feiner said.

Police haven’t released the names of the victims.
