Sinéad O’Connor’s Estate Demands Trump Stop Using Her Music at Campaign Events

Sinéad O’Connor has joined the ranks of artists who want Donald Trump to stop using their music at campaign events.
Last month, the late singer's hit version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” was reportedly played at Trump campaign events, leading her estate and longtime record label to release a joint statement telling the former president to “desist from using her music immediately.”
O’Connor, who changed her name to Shuhada' Sadaqat in 2018 upon converting to Islam but still performed under her birth name, was known for living by “a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards her fellow human,” according to the statement.
“It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at his political rallies,” the statement reads. “It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil.’” The statement ends by demanding that Trump stop using her music “immediately.” So far, there has not been any reporting that Trump or his campaign has responded.
It’s the first-ever stage adaptation of Prince’s iconic semi-autobiographical movie from 1984.
O’Connor died of natural causes in July 2023 at the age of 56, according to The Guardian. As her estate noted, she was a passionate advocate for the oppressed throughout her life, even when it led to her career being damaged. During a 1992 Saturday Night Live performance, in which she performed a cover of Bob Marley’s song “War,” O’Connor ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II, threw the pieces on the floor, and said, “Fight the real enemy.” The former Pope has been criticized widely for failing to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, and O’Connor’s performance led to much wider awareness of the issue before it was widely known.
O’Connor was also an avid supporter of Palestine, telling Irish music publication Hot Press, “Let’s just say that, on a human level, nobody with any sanity, including myself, would have anything but sympathy for the Palestinian plight. There’s not a sane person on earth who in any way sanctions what the fuck the Israeli authorities are doing.”
