Shooting At Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Leaves One Person Dead, 22 Injured

This was supposed to be a happy week for Kansas City Chiefs fans as they celebrated their hometown team winning Super Bowl LVIII over the San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, tragedy struck as a shooting broke out which left one person dead and 22 people injured, eight of whom were children.

The Kansas City Star confirmed that Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a local DJ, died on Wednesday evening (Feb. 14) while undergoing emergency surgery for injuries sustained during the shooting. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves revealed that three people had been taken into custody during the shooting, but did not share any specific details about them or the weapons during a press conference.

Footage circulating online showed that several parade attendees ran for safety when the shooting broke out, but a few decided to fight back and tackle one of the shooters so the police could arrest them.

One of the men who tackled a shooter, Paul Contreras, went live on CNN with his daughter to discuss the experience. “I just heard somebody yelling to stop this guy, tackle him,” he said. “And he was coming in the opposite direction, so I just, you don’t think about it, it’s just a reaction. When I hit him from behind, I either jarred the gun out of his hand or out of his sleeve.”

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves expressed her disappointment in how the situation unfolded and future steps. “I’m angry at what happened today,” she said. “The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment. There’s a lot of work ahead. This is just the beginning stages. All of that is being actively investigated.”

Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback who threw the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime and received his third Super Bowl MVP award, shared a tweet about the disappointing situation. “Praying for Kansas City…,” he wrote with three prayer hand emojis.

VIBE sends its condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of Lisa Lopez-Galvan. Additionally, our best wishes go out to those who were harmed in the shooting.
