Tesla Recalls 2 Million Cars With Self-Driving Feature Over High-Risk Software Flaw
Two million Tesla vehicles have been recalled following a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency found that the car models featuring the self-driving feature — including models Y, S, 3, and X produced between Oct. 5, 2012, and Dec. 7, 2023 — contain a high-risk software flaw that has likely contributed to an increase in wrecks and crashes.
Tesla will issue a software update with limitations on where Autopilot features like Autosteer and Traffic Aware Cruise Control can be used. According to the recall documents, “if the driver attempts to engage Autosteer when conditions are not met for engagement, the feature will alert the driver it is unavailable through visual and audible alerts, and Autosteer will not engage.”

According to Associated Press, Tesla did not agree with the results of NHTSA’s investigation — which stemmed from a number of accidents involving their self-driving vehicles — but accepted the decision to recall in hopes of resolving the investigation. In February, 360,000 Tesla vehicles with its Full Self-Driving Beta software were also recalled.
Tesla began deploying the updated software in vehicles this week, incorporating additional safety features. “The remedy will incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already existing on affected vehicles to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged, which includes keeping their hands on the steering wheel and paying attention to the roadway,” according to the documents.
Updated controls in qualifying vehicles will also include an increase in “the prominence of visual alerts on the user interface, simplifying engagement and disengagement of Autosteer, additional checks upon engaging Autosteer and while using the feature outside controlled access highways and when approaching traffic controls, and eventual suspension from Autosteer use if the driver repeatedly fails to demonstrate continuous and sustained driving responsibility while the feature is engaged.”
The update should assist in reducing driver misuse of the self-driving feature. Autopilot has been involved in at least 17 fatal accidents, according to data from the Washington Post, which reported: “When authorities first released a partial accounting of accidents involving Autopilot in June 2022, they counted only three deaths definitively linked to the technology.” There were also additional injuries reported, also linked to poor sensory awareness.
Two years ago, Musk claimed that Tesla would be able to function fully autonomously by 2022. Then, in 2022, the billionaire CEO stated that the self-driving feature in the cars are “really the difference between Tesla being worth a lot of money or worth basically zero,” according to The Independent.
In interviews, former Tesla employees have shared insight into the internal chaos at the company that has driven Musk’s promise of a fully autonomous car off-course. “No one believed me that working for Elon was the way it was until they saw how he operated Twitter,” John Bernal, a former Tesla test operator who worked in the Autopilot department, told Washington Post earlier this year. He referred to Twitter as “the tip of the iceberg on how he operates Tesla.”
