Every year, the fashion world is set ablaze with tales from the most important event of the year – The Met Gala. Even though it’s invite-only, attendees have to buy tickets for $35,000 each. Once that’s done, it’s time to find a lavish outfit that fits the theme and (hopefully) goes down in history for all the right reasons.

Over the years, we’ve seen some incredible efforts made by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Jared Leto, Zendaya, and more. From a gown that took 600 hours to make, to $8,000-a-pop hand-sewn pearls, these are the most expensive and extravagant outfits ever worn to the Met Gala.

1. Sarah Jessica Parker – Catholic D&G Gown

Year: 2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
Designed By: D&G
Estimated Value: $50,000*

Sarah Jessica Parker has been a Met Gala staple for years, thanks in part to her highly-publicized love affair with fashion. It isn’t just SJP’s most famous character Carrie Bradshaw that loves couture looks. The actress is no stranger to a designer piece or three.

In 2018, SJP rocked the Met Gala carpet in an elaborate D&G gilded gown with red detailing. The cherry on top of the sundae was a stunning headpiece that couldn’t have been comfortable to wear. Although the exact price of the outfit was never revealed, similar D&G couture items retail for upwards of £20,000.

2. Katy Perry – Chandelier Chic

Year: 2019 – Camp: Notes on Fashion
Designed By: Jeremy Scott for Moschino
Estimated Value: $50,000*

Ever since exploding onto the scene in the noughties with her hit single “I Kissed A Girl”, Katy Perry has been nothing but fashion-forward. The songstress is never shy when it comes to the way she dresses. For the 2019 theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, Perry took it to the next level.

Never mind Sia swinging from the chandelier, Katy Perry wore one. The American Idol judge teamed up with Moschino to create this illuminating look that weighed over 40 pounds. The designer behind the piece was Jeremy Scott, who revealed that it took six weeks to adorn the dress with thousands of Swarovski Crystals.

3. Chrissy Teigen – Snowball Extravaganza

Year: 2017 – Rei Kawakubo x Comme des Garçons
Designed By: Marchesa
Estimated Value: $20,000*

It isn’t very often that the Met Gala theme focuses on a living designer, but in 2017 Rei Kawakubo got the honor of a lifetime. All the usual big names were in attendance, including Chrissy Teigen and her husband, John Legend.

While John looked like his usual dapper self, Chrissy decided to up her game and wear a stunning Marchesa gown that resembled snowfall. The sheer dress was heavily detailed with lace and complemented by diamond hair accessories.

4. Iman – Feather Hoopla

Year: 2021 – In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
Designed By: Harris Reed x Gucci
Estimated Value: $25,000*

Supermodel Iman is no stranger to turning heads and dazzling photographers with her incredible looks. After all, she’s been in the industry for decades and was married to fellow fashion icon David Bowie from 1992 until his passing in 2016. In 2021, Iman hit the right note yet again when she teamed up with Harris Reed and Gucci.

The designer crafted a sensational outfit for Iman that consisted of a gold bustier and matching pants and a fabulous cage overskirt. As if that wasn’t enough, the giant feather headpiece gave off the striking impression of a halo surrounding the Somalian-born star’s already angelic features.

5. Kim Kardashian – Total Blackout

Year: 2021 – In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
Designed By: Balenciaga
Estimated Value: $30,000+*

Kim Kardashian may be known as a reality TV queen, but she openly credits ex-husband Kanye West with upping her fashion stock. Kim has been seen pushing the boundaries of designer looks for years now, but it was her 2021 Met Gala look that really captured headlines.

Kim wore head-to-toe Balenciaga, without even the merest hint of skin. The mom-of-four even covered her face, making for some striking photographs. At the time, Kim’s hairstylist Chris Appleton let it slip on Instagram that her impressive faux-ponytail cost a whopping $10,000. This may not have been one of Kim’s most expensive looks, but it certainly wasn’t cheap.

6. Constance Jablonski – Metal Goddess Gown

Year: 2013 – Punk: Chaos to Couture
Designed By: Wes Gordon
Estimated Value: $35,610*

Constance Jablonski is a French model and former face of Estee Lauder cosmetics. In 2013, she fully embraced the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” theme, working alongside designer Wes Gordon to come up with an electrifying look.

The resulting metal goddess gown struck all the right notes, but it wasn’t a cheap off-the-rack pick by any means. With a reported price tag of $35,610, it wasn’t an impulse buy. Unfortunately for Constance, it’s not something that she was ever likely to wear again, either.

7. Emma Watson – Cut-Out Gown

Year: 2013 – Punk: Chaos to Couture
Designed By: Prabal Gurung
Estimated Value: $4,495*

Compared to some of the other dresses in Met Gala history, Emma Watson’s 2013 ensemble may not be one for the books. However, don’t be fooled by the simple cut-out gown. This dress was designed by Prabal Gurung and actually cost just under $5,000.

That’s a heck of a lot of money considering just how simple the style is, but it just goes to show that sometimes the most expensive things are reserved and refined. Emma has stepped her game up in recent years but has a trademark chic and sophisticated style that translates into most of her choices.

8. Cara Delevigne – Black Sheer Gown

Year: 2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
Designed By: Dior
Estimated Value: $20,000*

As one of the world’s most prominent models, Cara Delevingne has worn some truly bizarre things both on and off the runway. In 2018, she embraced the “Heavenly Bodies” theme but turned away from gold, unlike the majority of attendees. Instead, Cara worked with Dior on a sheer black gown and a matching headpiece.

At the time, the model sported short pink hair which made the entire look even more striking. It’s not clear how much Cara’s dress cost, but other Dior couture pieces can go for as much as $20,000 and beyond. The Amazon actress certainly wore it well.

9. Dan Levy – Blue Paradise

Year: 2021 – In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
Designed By: Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson.
Estimated Value: $15,000*

Dan Levy is the son of actor Euguene Levy and an accomplished star in his own right. The pair starred alongside each other in the hit series Schitt’s Creek. In 2021, Dan chose to honor a prolific AIDS activist with his striking blue suit, designed by Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson.

The pair worked together to create a look that incorporated the artwork of David Wojarowicz. Of course, both Dan and the designer went about things in a respectful manner and approached the family of Wojnarovicz for permission before using his work. Levy explained the process on his Instagram page, much to the delight of fans.

10. Grimes – Elvish Fashion Gown

Year: 2021 – In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
Designed By: Iris Van Herpen
Estimated Value: $5,000-$10,000*

Grimes has always marched to the beat of her own drum, as can be witnessed by simply looking at her baby name choices. The songstress attended the Met Gala solo in 2021, looking like something straight out of a video game.

Her ethereal elvish look was created alongside designer Iris Van Herpen. Herpen’s style suited Grimes’ aesthetic down to a T, allowing her to express her own personality while also sticking to the theme. A quick look on Van Herpen’s website shows that a belt from her collection costs $995 alone. Grimes never said how much the dress was, but it was likely somewhere in the region of $5,000-$10,000, accessories notwithstanding.

11. Gigi Hadid – Puffer Fashion Gown

Year: 2022 – In America: An Anthology of Fashion
Designed By: Versace
Estimated Value: $10,000*

Gigi Hadid has worn some extraordinary outfits to the Met Gala in recent years, but 2022’s Versace puffer coat might be the best. The supermodel walked the carpet in a striking burgundy outfit. The jumpsuit layered with the enormous coat should have looked terrible, but on Gigi it was the height of fashion.

Puffer coats have experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years thanks to the endorsement of celebs like Gigi, her sister Bella, and singer Billie Eilish. It’s not hard to see why looks like this end up in publications like the New York Times.

12. Jared Leto – Twin Suits

Year: 2022 – In America: An Anthology of Fashion
Designed By: Gucci
Estimated Value: $5,000-$10,000*

Jared Leto can do it all. He can act, he can sing, he can model – and he also looks dashing in a suit. The triple threat has been working as an ambassador for Gucci for quite some time now, so it’s only fitting that the fashion house has dressed him for some important events. In 2022, he appeared alongside Gucci’s own Alessandro Michele in matching suits for the Met Gala.

The cream-colored tuxedos were adorned with delicate floral patterns and came complete with a striking red bow tie. It’s not the first time that Leto has shown up at the event wearing an Alessandro Michele design. In 2019, the Sony actor wore a red ensemble that came complete with a replica of his own head.

13. Zendaya – Metal Moment

Year:  2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
Designed By: Atelier Versace
Estimated Value: $112,000*

It’s no secret that Zendaya has been riding the waves of success for years now. With numerous hit shows and movies under her belt, Zendaya has battled her way to the top. In 2018, she wore a Joan of Arc-themed chainmail dress designed by the wizards at Atelier Versace.

The former Disney starlet completed the look with a short, red bob hairdo. Of course, the entire ensemble was painstakingly assembled and was an immediate hit. Zendaya never revealed the price tag, but custom Atelier Versace gowns can go for as much as $112,000.

14. Beyonce – Sheer Bliss

Year: 2015 – China: Through the Looking Glass
Designed By: Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy
Estimated Value: $17,000*

Queen Bey isn’t just a diva and an award-winning artist, she’s a bonafide fashion icon. Mrs. Carter stepped onto the red carpet back in 2015 for the theme “China: Through the Looking Glass.” Thanks to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, Bey topped most best-dressed lists for the event.
