EU referendum: Bookies cut odds on Remain vote as expert warn polls are too close to call
WITH four days until the Brexit vote, opinion polls show the two sides are neck and neck with experts saying the come of the vote 'has never looked more uncertain'.
BOOKIES cut the odds on a Remain vote yesterday with four days until Britain votes on the European Union.
Experts said the result was still too close to call as a new poll put the Leave and Remain sides almost neck and neck.
Betting firms were offering odds of 4-9 on Britain choosing to stay part of the EU, compared with 4-7 on Thursday.
Three opinion polls published today show no more than four percentage points between the two sides, within the
pollsters’ margin of error.
pollsters’ margin of error.
A survey by Opinium for the Observer has the campaigns tied on 50 per cent.
A YouGov online poll for ITV’s Good Morning Britain today put the Brexit side on 51 per cent of the vote and Remain on 49 per cent, once undecided voters are excluded.
And a poll for the Mail on Sunday puts Remain four points ahead, 52 to 48.
Survation interviewed 1001 voters after the death of MP Jo Cox.
Polling expert John Curtice, professor of politics at Strathclyde University, said the outcome of the vote “has never looked more uncertain”.
He said: “The shifts in opinion over the past four weeks have been considerable.
“The Remain side has been a one-legged pony at risk of discovering its leg is lame.
“They have failed to persuade people that life can be better if we remain inside the EU. It is a very one-sided argument that has been perhaps over-egged.
“On the other side of the coin, the Leave side have a very clear message – take back control. It has been repeated and clearly has resonance.”
Both polls were carried out before the death of Labour MP Jo on Thursday.
Curtice said it was difficult to know what effect the tragedy would have on the campaigns.
He said: “If you take the view that Remain are now at risk of losing, the loss of campaigning days is not good news for them.
“The anti-establishment argument the Leave side might have wanted to use will have to be used more carefully.
“Given the humanity demonstrated by some politicians over the past few days, the line – if it is going to be pursued – must be used more carefully.”
Meanwhile, one survey of voters revealed they have become more inclined to want to stay in the EU after the MP’s murder. The finding comes in a ComRes poll today.
It shows the killing of the 41-year-old mum of two could have a direct effect on Thursday’s result.
Before the tragedy, 45 per cent of those polled said they would be “delighted” if the UK voted to leave the EU.
That dropped to 38 per cent after it – and the Remain camp got a nine point boost.
ComRes chairman Andrew Hawkins said this could be significant.
Meanwhile, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie will say membership of the EU helps Britain to be a force for good in the world.
Rennie will invoke the memory of Charles Kennedy in a speech in Paisley.
He will say the former Liberal Democrat leader, who died suddenly last June at the age of 55, would not have wanted to miss out on the campaign for Europe.
Just four days ahead of the poll, Rennie is expected to say: “I look at his words in his speech to the Council of Europe in June 2014. He quoted Robert Burns and the need to see ourselves as others see us. And in the next five days, that is surely the poetry everyone in Scotland and the whole UK needs to think about.
“What message would we send around the world if we said that we can’t work with others, that we always know best?”
The Scotland Stronger In Europe group insist Scots could swing the vote in favour of Britain remaining.
They said: “UK-wide, the vote could go either way, that’s what the polls tell us, so everybody in Scotland who has the sentiment that they want to stay in the EU needs to get out and vote for it.
“There is a real possibility that Scotland’s votes could make the difference for Remain.”
