UFC 329 results: Conor McGregor blows out knee immediately, loses Max Holloway comeback fight in 69 seconds
Conor McGregor famously suffered a blown-out knee 13 years ago in his first UFC meeting against Max Holloway. More than a decade later, history repeated itself in the most anticlimactic way possible at UFC 329.
McGregor's much-hyped MMA return after five years away ended in disappointment on Saturday in Las Vegas, as the former two-division champion suffered what appeared to be another blown-out knee in the opening seconds of his first fight since 2021.
The official result was a Holloway victory in just 69 seconds.
"Let's give it up for Conor McGregor, guys," Holloway said afterward to a booing T-Mobile Arena. "What an absolute animal. When we were in here, I was trying to call the fight [off], and he kept asking to fight on. But you guys are lucky because there's going to be a Holloway vs. McGregor 3 now. Let's get this f***ing money, boys."
"What can I say," Holloway added, "I had him weak in the knees, I guess."
The result is a profoundly unlucky one for a night that generated the highest-grossing gate in UFC history, per UFC CEO Dana White. McGregor's comeback bout had been a major MMA storyline for the majority of the past five years, ever since the star Irishman's 2021 trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier ended with him suffering a disastrous broken leg.
McGregor (22-7) was expected to return in June 2024 for a fight against Michael Chandler following the pair's coaching stints on "The Ultimate Fighter 31," however that matchup was scrapped just weeks before the event when McGregor sustained a broken toe.
McGregor's return was further put on ice after the former champion was found liable in late 2024 for the sexual assault of Nikita Hand in Dublin civil court.
Holloway (28-9) eventually drew the assignment for McGregor's return bout, in large part because of the pair's history — the two veterans previously fought in 2013, with McGregor winning a unanimous decision in the infancies of both men's careers.
But it wasn't meant to be.
McGregor, 37, sporting a mohawk similar to the one he wore for his UFC debut more than a decade ago, appeared to injure his right knee in the opening seconds on Saturday after sprinting across the canvas and launching a flying kick at Holloway. McGregor then slipped to the canvas multiple times in the ensuing exchanges, with Holloway repeatedly calling attention to the injury before referee Mike Beltran stopped the action.
McGregor ultimately exited the cage under his own power but was visibly limping on his right side, with the broadcast subsequently confirming he suffered a knee injury.
