Gorgeous California forest home is now on verge of collapsing onto nearby road

California home nestled in the iconic Redwood forest region is at risk of collapsing onto a nearby road after torrential rain eroded a hillside.

The property is precariously perched atop a cliff in Guerneville, a community just south of the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve.

It has been teetering on the edge of a steep drop since Monday after a hillside collapse at around 2.20pm.

Neighbors described hearing a 'boom' as the home came away from its foundation and was left lurching dangerously close to collapsing onto other homes below.

Residents were issued an evacuation warning 'due to landslide and tree fall risk' which remains in effect amid a barrage of rain in the area.

'The next-door neighbor called me and told me, "Hey, the house is falling down,"' nearby resident May Maye told KTVU-TV.

Nobody was in the home at the time of the collapse, although workers were reportedly building a retaining wall and a parking spot directly beneath the home. Some tree removals were also underway.

'They cut out a couple trees and when you pull out trees, there's gonna be erosion,' Maye said.

Dave Harris, managing director of Oracle Consulting Geotechnical Services, fixes homes damaged in landslides and brings them back into compliance with state codes.

'It's not uncommon to have these circumstances where there's been a lot of wet weather that has caused slippage in the soil that has existed naturally for connection,' he told KTVU.

The soil conditions are weakening even further due to a storm that has brought nearly three inches of rain since Monday resulting in the evacuation warning.

An evacuation warning is not mandatory but is meant to inform residents that there is a potential threat to life and property. It is one step below an evacuation order, which is only issued when the danger is immediate.

Authorities encouraged affected Guerneville residents to prepare to leave and plan evacuation routes in case of a landslide.

'Remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen. If you feel unsafe, leave immediately and do not wait for an evacuation order, the sheriff's office said in a statement.
