Ever wonder what goes down behind the scenes at strip clubs? The question was asked in r/AskReddit, and boy did the answers ~slide~ in. People wrote in on the BTS things that take place inside these establishments that folks generally aren't aware of, and it's really, really fascinating. Here's what people said:
1. "Often there's a mirror mounted low or on the floor in the dressing room where the girls make a quick check of the equipment before going on stage."

2. "Sometimes there are 'house moms' who run the dressing rooms. Sometimes the house mom is a gay guy. Sometimes he is tasked with trimming or tucking in a girl's tampon string so it doesn't show when she is nude onstage."
3. "A stripper once told me she didn't want to work at a certain other club because they had Kleenex in the private rooms."

4. "Not a stripper, but managed a strip club for two years. The main thing that I found interesting is that being hot isn't the main thing that will determine success. The girls who make the best money are those with strong personalities, who create a connection that makes the customer want to pay to stay in the moment. Also, the amount of money that some people spend. We have several customers that will spend anywhere between $5,000 and $15,000 a night on dances alone, and do this multiple nights every week."
5. "I was a strip club DJ for several years, worked lunchtime and night shifts seven days a week, in a country far away, where sex and nudity weren't allowed on the same premises. Half the time, the DJ booth was in the dressing room, and the other half, I'm in and out of the room because organizing strippers is like herding cats. Other sex workers looked down upon the strippers as 'silly young girls,' while strippers looked down upon them as 'mental old women.' The ages of each were the same. Our strippers were waged, with odd instances of earning extra money via tipping (rarely, because it’s not a thing in our country), doing a stag on stage, out calls, or performing the special acts each night."

6. "I pay the club every night that I go into work. It varies between cities; it can be as low as $10 or as high as $100, but is usually somewhere in the middle."

7. "Aside from the percentage of earnings taken from you every night, we were also charged £5-£10 for being seen on our phones around customers and also for being 10-15 minutes late for work."
8. "A friend was a cocktail waitress at a strip club, and we hung out there after hours one time. The most mind-blowing thing to me is that the pole rotates! It basically acts like the center 'pole' part of a merry-go-round. The girls aren’t spinning around the pole, but they are holding on, and the pole is spinning."

9. "Not a stripper, but I worked at a pretty popular local titty bar for a couple of years. I had some fun experiences, but one thing that surprised me was the number of straight women who would come into the club. Groups of women would come in for a birthday party or something like that, get a few bricks of singles, and buy dances all night while literally making it rain. Some women would come in just to get free drinks from all the horny dudes that frequented the club. Some women would even bring their boyfriends along and pay for their dances just to show them a good time. This place wasn't a traditional strip club, though. They were a 'bar with an adult entertainment license,' so alcohol was served, which made the environment a little different."
10. "I was a cocktail waitress at a strip club. It presented as a higher-end gentlemen's club, but it was still a strip club. Never wanted to be a stripper because of the clientele. Some men thought the point of a strip club was for sexual favors. It's not; you're paying for the interaction and attention that a beautiful girl is providing. No, she will not run away with you; she doesn't want your dick. You are paying for a fantasy, and that's it."

12. "We had the nastiest robes to go outside to smoke in. Nobody was allowed to take them to wash them, and the club workers wouldn't. Mix that with rolling around on the stage and having many men touch your back or legs throughout your shift. Not to mention your own sweat. Dirty job. There are strange relationships between regulars and dancers sometimes. Really strange. Marriages and cheaters on both sides, jealousy traps — girls 'claim' customers and get bitchy AF if they get a dance from someone else."

13. "I work with accounts, and that includes strip clubs, so I’m at different ones somewhat often. There are two types of strip clubs. The not-so-nice ones, where sex happens, and your classier ones, where it’s just girls dancing. The not-so-nice ones usually have cameras that just happen to not be working currently, or have big blind spots, and that’s where all the good stuff happens. That way, if law enforcement does happen to show up, it’s plausible deniability. If security doesn’t like you, this is also where they can go to roughen you up as well. There are also usually other shady things happening in the back, too. I’d really avoid those places. At the classier ones, the security is on point, and they really take care of their girls, and treat them like they would their sister. They constantly have someone watching the cameras and are quick to make sure everything is OK. They’re very good at reading situations."

14. "I'm probably in pain at any given point in the night. The dance I’m giving you is killing my knees, and I’m counting down the minutes in a VIP. Also, as others have said, I get charged to work. Both a flat fee and a percentage of every dance. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t make thousands every weekend, and I consider myself good-looking, and I work hard. Most people would not find the work worth the money. There’s a reason so many girls come and go so quickly. That said, I actually enjoy my job for the most part. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I think people would be surprised at the number of dancers who don’t have to work there. People with degrees and full-time jobs. People with money saved up. People who are taken care of. For some of us, it’s a hobby. For some of us, it’s a job. And for some, including myself, it’s both."
15. "Where I used to work, we had an award-winning chef who created an entire menu. He was open all night. It was kind of weird thinking back on it now, but so many people would come in for steak at 5 a.m. after a big night out and didn’t even want to look at the dancers."

16. "I worked as a chef in a strip club with a fine dining restaurant in it; it was an upscale joint. Most of the women had a menu of things they would do in the VIP room. If a garment was hanging on the door, that meant something was going on in there that management would want plausible deniability for. The club I worked at was in a major coastal city, and girls would fly in from all over the West Coast to work for the weekend. Some of the women were amazing athletes. We had a pole that went up three stories and a trapeze. Some of their routines amazed me and gave me a newfound respect for strippers."

17. "A lot of girls order strangely named drinks that have no alcohol in them. They are priced high, and the dancers get a cut at the end of the night."
18. "I was a cocktail server at a strip club. A lot of girls were really quite bright and working to put themselves through school. I worked with one who would order an alcoholic drink like cranberry vodka but really only wanted cranberry juice. She did this to help me skim more off the top. Charge the customer $8 for a drink, but only order the $4 cranberry juice, and pocket the extra $8. I'm not a great hustler, so I always messed this up. I didn't stay long because it wasn't my scene. Lastly, we actually had to take a test to get the job. It was to see if you could handle the math associated with tips and percentages, and it was timed. So, they checked out your body and then had you take a math test!"

19. "A friend who dances told me she could be fired if she were caught refusing champagne because of the markup. She works at a club an hour away because it has better tips, so she and some of the girls have to sneak to the bathroom to pour out the champagne so they don't drive home drunk. They're allowed to pour it out as long as the clients don't see them. Otherwise, they have to drink it. She said they would only get a warning if caught having sex with clients for money, but would be fired on the first offense for refusing champagne. Years ago, she also offered to take me to the place where all the dancers met their sugar daddies. I declined."

20. "Buy drinks for the ladies. Some strip clubs have a minimum number of drinks a girl needs to convince customers to buy her, and if she doesn't make the quota, she has to pay for it out of her tips. Make sure you buy the drink with her so she can get the credit. If she makes anything above her quota, she gets a specific amount for each credit. She'll also likely have to tip out the bar, the hostess, security, the DJ, and it's considered polite to also tip the emcee, but it's not always required. Some girls don't make a lot after all the tip-outs. Also, if she gets a champagne room, it counts towards her drink quota, and she gets a portion of the room fee if you pay above a certain amount. Don't be gross and expect her to do something she isn't comfortable doing just because you are paying so much for her time. She is giving you undivided attention and losing out on lap dances and stage tips."
21. "Many of us have fake real names that we tell clients when they pressure us for a real name. So, if a dancer tells you her 'real name,' there’s a good chance that it’s still not her real name. Sometimes clubs have a code word for the bartender to make a drink non-alcoholic (my home club uses 'perfect'), so when you’re buying us tons of shots, we can get them non-alcoholic and just act tipsy. Many of us are married with kids and living a 'normal' life outside of work. It’s as diverse an industry as you could ever imagine."
22. And lastly, "I’m not a stripper, but I worked multiple jobs in a high-end strip club for eight years (male staff member)."
