Jake Paul Says His ‘Heart Is Broken’ After His Fiancee Left Olympic Speed Skating Trials in Tears
Boxer Jake Paul is reacting to his fiancée Jutta Leerdam’s fall in her Friday, December 26, Olympic speed skating qualifying race.
"It's really, really hard. And I know this is her whole life. Her whole dream. And everything she's worked so hard for. My heart is broken," Paul said to reporters on Friday. "This sport is so bizarre. She could just show up at the starting line and go again. And she had such a fast opening."
Leerdam, 26, was competing in the 1000 meter speed skating tournament on Friday, when she took a tumble, putting her qualification to the Winter Olympics in Milan in jeopardy.
The national selection committee will now determine if Leerdam will participate in the Winter Games. A decision is expected in early January, per Olympics.com.

She left the ice in tears, seemingly understanding the magnitude of the moment.
"It felt like there was something on the ice,” Leerdam told reporters after the race. “Or a blunt spot on my skate. You just don't want this. I'm so bummed.”
She continued, "I don't even know what happened. It felt like I was standing on something. I just completely slid away. I'm skating so well in practice and I was so excited.”
Paul, 28, was in attendance for the speed skating qualifier in support of his fiancée.
Despite the fall, Paul hopes Leerdam can still earn a spot on the Olympic roster.
"We all know this is her race,” Paul said. “She's won multiple World Cups, so hopefully justice will be done for her and she can be there to represent the Netherlands at the Olympics."
He continued, “I know how hard she works and how good she skates. It's just so sad.”
More in Sports
Leerdam was a silver medalist in Beijing 2022. She has won the 1000m distance twice at the Speed Skating World Cup.
She competed in the 500-meter race on Sunday, December 28, bouncing back to finish in second place.
Despite the successful finish in the 500m race, Leerdam has previously said that the 1000m distance is her bread and butter.
“I'm so hyper-focused on one competition,” she said to Dutch media back in October. “When the pressure is on, I just skate faster. I always put pressure on myself and want to make progress every time, which isn't easy.”
Paul and Leerdam announced their engagement via Instagram in March, in a joint post.
“We’re engaged💍🕊️🤍we can’t wait to spend forever together🥹,” he wrote alongside photos from the special moment.
The couple met via Instagram in 2022 and went public with their relationship in April 2023. Leerdam said Paul sent her a message on the social media app asking her to be on his podcast. The rest, as they say, is history.
Jake Paul Says He Has ‘2 Titanium Plates’ and ‘Teeth Removed’ After Breaking Jaw in Netflix Fight
“I never, ever expected to date him, like never,” she said in the documentary Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson. “Of course, I didn’t know a lot about him. I could only scroll on his Instagram and form an opinion like the whole world does. But he is the complete opposite.”
Paul is coming off a KO loss to Anthony Joshua on December 19, where Paul suffered a broken jaw in two places. It was the first knockout loss of his career.
“I feel good. That was fun. I love this sport,” Paul said after the match despite the loss. “I got my ass beat, but that’s what this sport is about.
He continued, “Man, I’ve already won in every single way in life. This sport has helped me in every single way … I think my jaw is broken, by the way.”
