scandal-plagued Arizona ex-prosecutor's career and reputation lie in ruins over claims she refused to return $40,000 of jewelry delivered to her by mistake and sold a diamond bracelet from the haul online.

Vanessa Dailey, 49, has been charged with felony theft after receiving a pricey package meant for someone else at her Phoenix condominium complex on May 31 - before allegedly stealing one of the items to turn a profit.

The former division chief at the Arizona Attorney General's Office - professionally known as Vanessa Hickman - was unwilling to hand over the expensive accessories to their rightful recipient, investigators said.

US Postal inspectors came knocking on her door nine times trying to take back the package, according to court records reviewed by AZ Central.

She allegedly told investigators that she runs an online store on web retailer Poshmark, so she often has an influx of packages being delivered to and shipped from her home.

Finally, Dailey gave in about a month later and returned the package, but postal authorities allegedly found the return suspicious.

While Dailey gave them the missing package, inspectors noticed excessive tape on it - even though she claimed that she never opened it, KOLD reported.

But the intended recipient, who had been expecting a package from a friend in Florida, was dismayed to find that a $2,400 diamond bracelet from Costco was nowhere to be found.

Photos reviewed by authorities indicated that Dailey had removed a label from the package, according to court records.

Investigators discovered that Dailey allegedly sold an identical wrist piece on Poshmark about 10 days before returning the package, initially listing it for $1,947, but ultimately selling it for just $750.

'This dramatic undervaluing is consistent with the sale of stolen property,' investigators wrote in court filings, as per KOLD.

Amid the unflattering accusations stemming from the investigation, Dailey was placed on leave from her top position at the AG's office on November 13.

US Postal Service (USPS) inspectors arrested Dailey on November 19 in connection with the stolen jewelry.

The county sheriff's office told the Daily Mail that she was released from custody the following day.

On Monday, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office formally charged the disgraced prosecutor with one count of felony theft.

While she currently is only facing one charge, a Postal Inspection Service report recommended that she also be charged with the more serious felony of trafficking in stolen property.

Dailey did not respond to Daily Mail's request for comment. When an AZ Family reporter went to her condo for a statement, she declined to speak.

This is not the first time Dailey has found herself accused of stealing.

She previously worked as the City of Peroia's attorney but took a leave of absence in January 2023.

The city has launched a lawsuit against her, alleging that she had wrongfully accepted $139,000 in severance funds - coming out of taxpayers' pockets.

Dailey has fiercely denied any wrongdoing. She filed a countersuit against Peroia last year, but the Maricopa County Superior Court dismissed her case, allowing the ongoing lawsuit to move forward.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for Arizona AG Kris Mayes confirmed that Dailey has stepped away from her high-ranking position.

'Attorney General Mayes believes that every individual is entitled to due process, but also that justice must be served,' he said.

'The allegations against Ms Hickman [Dailey] are serious for any state employee, particularly someone in a leadership position.'

The Daily Mail has reached out to Mayes' office, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, the city of Peroia and the USPS Inspection Service for comment.
