Jimmy Kimmel Tears Up While Addressing Charlie Kirk Comments in ABC Return
Jimmy Kimmel returned to late-night television Tuesday after nearly a week off-air, breaking down in tears as he addressed his suspension over comments about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
The host insisted he never meant to mock the tragedy, but even through tears he stopped short of offering a direct apology.
Kimmel Returns
Kimmel was greeted by cheers and chants of “Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy!”
He opened by joking that the show was preempting “Celebrity Family Feud.”
“I’m happy to be here with you tonight,” he told the audience.
He thanked fellow late-night hosts Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, and David Letterman.
He also acknowledged right-leaning critics like Sen. Ted Cruz and Clay Travis.
Addresses the Kirk Comments
Kimmel said he never meant to make light of Kirk’s death.
In tears, he told viewers, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.”
He said he posted condolences to Kirk’s family the day of his death.
Kimmel added he did not mean to blame any political group.
He admitted his words may have felt “ill-timed or unclear.”
Criticizes Disney
Kimmel criticized Disney for pulling him off the air last week.
“I was not happy when they pulled me,” he said.
He said he disagreed with the decision but respected discussions with Disney.
After 23 years on the air, he said the suspension felt unfair.
Still, he expressed gratitude to the company for bringing him back.
Praises Kirk’s Widow
Kimmel grew emotional when referencing Erika Kirk’s speech.
He praised her forgiveness of her husband’s assassin.

Political and Media Backlash
Sinclair and Nexstar refused to air Kimmel’s return.
Both companies control nearly a quarter of ABC affiliates.
They said his comments were “ill-timed and insensitive.”
FCC Chair Brendan Carr also issued a veiled threat against the show.
President Trump blasted ABC for bringing Kimmel back, calling him “not funny” and “a true bunch of losers.”
