Awards season is officially ready to launch. On Sunday night, the Golden Globes will kick off the race to the 2025 Oscars with the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The star-studded event will air live on CBS linear television and stream live on Paramount+ for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers.

The Golden Globes, routinely referred to as “Hollywood’s party of the year” (so much so that the group has trademarked that phrase), are the largest awards event in the world dedicated to honoring the year’s top projects in film and television. The Golden Globe Awards also kick off the televised portion of awards season, getting out in front of other ceremonies like the Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Oscars. (Note: Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Eldridge and Penske Media Corporation, which owns Gold Derby.)

Who is hosting the 2025 Golden Globes?

Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the 2025 Golden Globe Awards and is also a nominee. Glaser was nominated in the Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television category. “Nikki understands the dynamic and, more importantly, has been with us for four months now, so we’ve really been able to do a lot of work with her, and she’s great,” executive producer Glenn Weiss recently told Gold Derby. “She’s really doing her homework. She’s well prepared. And I just think from the top of the show, the monologue, this is going to be a show that’s very well received at home. … And we’re going to hit it quick. We’re not going to waste a lot of time on an open. Right at the top of the show, we’re going to get the best of Nikki. It’s going to hit really early and really well.”

Glaser, meanwhile, expressed level-headedness about her performance, suggesting that no matter what happens, she’ll be okay. “I’ve gone back and reviewed pretty much every comedy monologue from the Oscars to the Emmys to the Golden Globes over the past 15 years, and I’ve forgotten about all of the people who were hosting, even though at the time I loved and celebrated it. People will forget Nikki Glaser hosted and whether I killed it or not. In this industry, we move on so fast. Good or bad, people will move on and nothing really matters in the end,” she said. How to watch the Golden Globes red carpet

The official live digital pre-show for the Golden Globes is on Sunday, January 5, 2025, and begins at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT across Variety and Penske Media platforms. The Golden Globes red carpet preshow is a joint venture between Entertainment Tonight and Variety hosted by Rachel Smith (Entertainment Tonight Correspondent) and Marc Malkin (Variety Senior Culture and Events Editor).

Who was honored with the Golden Globes Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards?

This year, the Golden Globes selected former Golden Globes winner and EGOT winner Viola Davis as the Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient. Ted Danson — an Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning actor — was honored with the Carol Burnett Award. Both stars received the honors at a special ceremony on Friday nightMeryl Streep presented the award to Davis, and Danson’s wife, Mary Steenburgen, gave the former Cheers star his honor.

“I feel like someone just set me on fire,” Davis said in her speech. “Thank you, Meryl. You’re just a great broad. You forgot, I followed you into the toilet that first day of rehearsal [for Doubt]. I just wanted to smell you!” Davis claimed that she “discarded” her speech before she arrived at the ceremony, and Gold Derby confirmed that the teleprompter was indeed blank for her entire 16-minute oration.

“I have to admit, I’ve always had a confusing relationship with awards,” Danson, a competitive nominee at the Globes this year for A Man on the Inside, said. “If I win, I feel a little embarrassed and lonely. If I don’t win, I feel a little embarrassed and lonely.” Decades ago, he “finally realized” why — because his mother once noted his success, “Well, I’m happy for him, of course. But I’ve always believed in the nobility of quiet failure.” Amid laughter, the actor added, “Maybe it’s a Scottish thing or something. No wonder I’m confused!”
