A New “Wicked” Interview Clip Is Going Viral Because Of Cynthia Erivo’s Baffling Response To A Journalist Saying That People Are “Holding Space” For “Defying Gravity”
In recent weeks, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have earned a bit of a reputation for just how emotional their Wicked press tour has been.
In fact, the stars ended up having to address the way that they have repeatedly cried during interviews, with the women often being seen comforting one another while on the verge of tears.
Earlier this month, as they once again tried to stop themselves from crying, Ariana told E! News: “We can’t. We’ve cried 500 times today. And honestly, this is a PSA: So sorry, guys.”
“It is what it is… I mean, there’s nothing that we can do about it,” Cynthia agreed, with Ariana going on to add: “And you know what? If you’re just gonna comment saying how annoying it is, I’ll say it first. I’m annoyed, I’m tired. My tear ducts [are tired].”
In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, Ariana referenced how long they’d spent making the movie as she tried to explain why she and Cynthia were having such an emotional time promoting it.
“You need to understand, it’s been, like, three years, people!” she exclaimed before jokingly asking: “Why does emotional availability scare you so?”

And while people have now come to expect these moving displays when watching the stars’ interviews, some were still taken aback by the latest one to drop online.
The new clip has gone viral because social media users simply can’t understand what is going on in a baffling exchange about Cynthia’s epic musical number in the movie, “Defying Gravity.”
For reference, “Defying Gravity” is a stand-out moment in the stage production of Wicked, which premiered in 2003.
In the video, which was posted without comment to X on Thursday, reporter Tracy E. Gilchrist for Out.com can be seen telling Cynthia: “I’ve seen this week, people are taking the lyrics of ‘Defying Gravity’ and really holding space with that and feeling power in that.”
Cynthia immediately puts her hand to her chest as she gently admits: “Uh, I didn’t know that that was happening.”
“I’ve seen it, yeah,” Tracy replies, with Cynthia appearing to be at a loss for words as she chokes up and exclaims: “That’s really powerful, that’s what I wanted.”
She then turns to Ariana, who is sitting next to her, and Ariana looks incredibly serious as she solemnly reaches out and holds onto Cynthia’s finger.
“I didn’t know that was happening,” Cynthia repeats, seemingly in shock, with Tracy explaining: “I’ve seen it on a couple of posts, I don’t know how widespread [it is], but I’m in queer media.”
“That’s really cool,” Cynthia concludes.
The tweet of this clip has since been seen more than nine million times, with thousands of people reacting by sharing their confusion over this conversation.
One viral quote-tweet reads: “I’m completely mesmerized by this clip.. it’s almost like they are speaking a language I don’t understand. I can’t catch the sense of it for a single moment. I’m not understanding the words or the feelings or the energy at all. It’s amazing.”
“no video has ever affected me this much in my entire life. i saw it for the first time 12 hours ago and it has completely changed the way i talk,” somebody else wrote.
“I can't tell what my favorite part of this video is: the solemnity in announcing people have been ‘holding space’ for the lyrics of a 20 year old song, Cynthia acting like she personally wrote it, Ariana holding onto Cynthia's index finger, or the reveal of ‘a couple of posts,’” one more added.
“i've watched this like 30 times, and i still can't parse a single thing going on here,” another user wrote.
Somebody else quipped: “you’re laughing? people are taking the lyrics of defying gravity and really holding space with that and you’re laughing?”
