The Oscars are here! The 96th Academy Awards take place Sunday in Los Angeles, where Hollywood’s biggest stars gather to celebrate the year’s best in film.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leads the field with 13 nominations, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with 11 and 10 nods, respectively. The trio will be competing against seven other movies for Best Picture: American Fiction, The Holdovers, Maestro, Past Lives, The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall.

Barbie earned eight nominations, but Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director, nor was Margot Robbie nominated for Best Actress. Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Annette Bening (Nyad) and Emma Stone (Poor Things) got the nods Best Actress, while Nolan, Lanthimos and Scorsese will compete with Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) and Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) for Best Director.

The show will air at 7 p.m. ET — an hour earlier than usual — with Jimmy Kimmel emceeing the ceremony for the fourth time.

Yahoo Entertainment has you covered with red carpet arrivals. Our coverage will continue throughout the night with a live list of winners, dispatches from our reporters inside the Dolby Theatre and more.

A group of about a thousand protesters calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza gathered a few blocks from the Dolby Theatre on Sunday afternoon.

Security is always tight, but this year even moreso, given the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the LAPD “bolstered patrols in the area in anticipation of protests, and ticketholders for the ceremony and after-party events must pass through three checkpoints and a number of steel barriers before approaching the red carpet.”

  • Lily Gladstone has already made history this awards season

Lily Gladstone (Blackfeet/Nimíipuu), star of Killers of the Flower Moon, made history in January as the first Indigenous person to take home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. She’s also the first Native American woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars.

“This is for every little rez kid, every little urban kid, every little Native kid out there who has a dream, who is seeing themselves represented and our stories told — by ourselves — in our own words with tremendous allies and tremendous trust from each other,” she said in her Golden Globes acceptance speech.

Killers of the Flower Moon, which is nominated for 10 Oscars, is based on the true story of the systematic murders of members of the Osage Nation that took place in Oklahoma in the 1920s. Gladstone portrays Mollie Burkhart, a woman whose loved ones were killed by white men in pursuit of oil wealth.

The Native community has enthusiastically shown support for Gladstone’s achievements.

“It felt to me like definitely all of our ancestors were there with her onstage and very proud,” Sterlin Harjo (Seminole/Muscogee), who directed Gladstone in two episodes of Reservation Dogs, previously told Yahoo Entertainment.

  • Arriving at the 96th Academy Awards

  • The 'Oppenhomies' have serious chemistry

Oppenheimer stars Benny Safdie, Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, Alden Ehrenreich, Casey Affleck, Emily Blunt and Kenneth Branagh at the SAG Awards red carpet.

Oppenheimer might be a character study of one of the most darkly conflicted figures in American history, but when the cameras weren’t rolling, the cast got close enough to merit a jovial nickname.

In a January interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Emily Blunt revealed that she calls her Oppenheimer castmates “the Oppenhomies.”

The film's star, Cillian Murphy, also gave the group a shout-out as he was accepting a BAFTA for his portrayal of the father of the atomic bomb.

“I want to thank my fellow nominees and my Oppenhomies and, in fact, all of you in the room. I know it’s a cliché to say that I am in awe of you, but I genuinely am in awe,” he said.

Though actors were on strike when the film came out in July 2023, they’ve been making up for lost time together during award season — both in interviews and at the ceremonies where they’ve been racking up awards.

The film is nominated for 13 Oscars.

  • Sandra Hüller arrives in custom Schiaparelli

  • The academy brings back something from 2009 show

Four past winners are introducing the four current nominees for each acting award: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

It was a crowd-pleaser 15 years ago. The academy does not reveal which star is presenting which award, but it’s likely last year’s four acting winners — Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis — will be onstage as they’ve been named as presenter
