As Northern states brace for potential Mississippi River flooding, what can Mississippi expect?
Mississippi is not expected to have any significant flooding from Mississippi River flooding as Northern states along the river are bracing for flooding due to melting snow and rising river levels, National Weather Service officials said.
As counties along the Mississippi River in Iowa are implementing emergency procedures to brace for potential floods caused by the region's snowmelt, NWS in Jackson Meteorologist Marty Pope said Mississippi would not receive any significant flooding from the lingering snowmelt in the Northern region.
"The flows and flooding they have are fairly insignificant to Mississippi," Pope said. "Most of the snowmelt occurred upside toward the Minnesota and Wisconsin area. The crest on the lower Mississippi River has been reduced by 1 to 1.5 feet due to less upstream flow and lower upstream crests. Minor flooding is still forecasted for Natchez that will downstream to Baton Rouge."
