Brown’s self-titled debut album was released at the end of 2005, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It was certified triple platinum and spawned a hit with its lead single “Run It!” The record was such a strong debut that it made Brown a star.

Brown’s career hit a massive roadblock in 2009 that many artists would not have recovered from. On Feb. 8, 2009, in the early morning hours on the day of the Grammys, then-19-year-old Brown and his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, had an argument that escalated when Brown physically assaulted Rihanna. Brown’s assault on the "Umbrella" singer was so severe that she required hospitalization and a photo of the severe visible facial injuries was widely circulated. The police report described a brutal attack in which Brown hit, choked and bit Rihanna and tried to push her from the car. Brown was released from jail on $50,000 bail.

Later reports revealed two previous assaults on Rihanna that had gone unreported—the first around three months prior to the February assault where Rihanna slapped Brown during a fight and he pushed her into a wall and the second when Brown allegedly broke the front and passenger side windows on a Range Rover they were driving.

On June 22, 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault with a felony charge of making criminal threats dropped. Brown accepted a plea deal of community labor, five years probation and domestic violence counseling.

Brown’s probation was revoked in July 2013 after he was involved in an alleged hit-and-run, but the charges were later dropped, though he had an additional 1,000 hours of community service added to his probation terms. Later that year, in October 2013, Brown was again arrested for felony assault after an altercation with a fan ending with Brown throwing a punch that broke the man’s nose. The charge would eventually be reduced to a misdemeanor. Brown would go on to be diagnosed with Bipolar II and PTSD.

In 2015, when Brown and his former girlfriend Karrueche Tran broke up, she was granted a five-year restraining order against Brown, following claims he was physically abusive and threatened to kill her.
