Celtic fans anger locals after leaving trail of rubbish and broken bottles in Madrid square
Spaniards have slammed the scene left by supporters in the Plaza Mayor after their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid last night.
Celtic fans have been accused of trashing an iconic square in Madrid and leaving it 'looking like a crime scene'.
Spanish locals have slammed the scene left behind after football fans descended on the Plaza Mayor after their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid last night.
Glasgow fans packed into the square in the heart of the Spanish capital in the run-up to the match and spent the afternoon singing as they downed lager ahead of the match.
There were no reports of major public disorder but the mess left behind by the thousands of Hoops die-hards has angered locals. Images show green carrier bags and rubbish strewn across the area.
Regional TV broadcaster Telemadrid accused the revellers of abandoning a "crime scene" by leaving “hundreds of plastic bags, broken bottles and other ‘organic residue’.
Veteran diplomat Juan Manuel Molina hit out at Madrid’s politicians for allowing “drunken tourism” to tarnish one of the city’s most iconic areas, whose origins date back to the 15th century.
Posting a video of the rubbish left in the square, Spanish TV reporter Juan Ignacio Barerro said: "Let's say that Celtic's friends did not leave the Plaza Mayor this afternoon very beautiful."
Meanwhile, local journalist Luis Losada said: "This is how the Scottish barbarians have left the main square. Do we pass the cleaning bill?"
It's believed Celtic took over 10,000 to Madrid for the clash with just a small number of those gaining tickets, meaning most were left to watch the match in local pubs.
The Hoops fans headed back home after their comprehensive 5-1 defeat at the hands of reigning champions Real Madrid.
The Glasgow side missed a penalty and conceded from two as their campaign ended, but they did have a goal to cheer at the end as Jota netted a spectacular free-kick.
