Shark bites surfer in New Smyrna Beach; fourth incident for the year, second in a week
A Miami man was bitten by a shark while surfing in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
Sunday's shark bite is the fourth in Volusia County this year, all in New Smyrna Beach, and the second to occur in a week.
Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue Deputy Chief Tamra Malphurs confirmed that the shark bite was reported near the south jetty at 2999 N. Atlantic Ave. at 1:15 p.m.

The Miami resident, in his 30s, was surfing in waist-deep water when he was bitten by a 6-foot shark, Malphurs said.
"The surfer said he thought the shark was feeding on bait fish when he got bit," Malphurs said.
The Miami man was treated at the scene for an injury to his left foot and drove himself to the hospital, Malphurs said.
On July 3, a Daytona Beach resident was the third victim to suffer a shark bite in Volusia County.
The 28-year-old Daytona Beach man was surfing near the jetty in New Smyrna Beach when he fell off of his board and was bitten on the left foot, beach officials said.
The victim's injury was minor and the was treated at the scene. He was driven to the hospital by a friend, beach officials said.
