Why did he not submit to a lie detector test,this would have been the easiest answer.... to his innocence rather than spend a lot of money trying to clear his name.
I personally think all athletes somehow dope themselves ,either way he could have made his life easier but no his ego got in the way ...
If you have 7 titles and your innocent you would want people to know you are a great athlete,but he has given up ...i certainly would do everything in my power ,include taking a lie detector to prove i was the best .....
